17.May is one of the most celebrated days in Norway, and it marks when the constitution declared Norway to be an independent kingdom, after being lononized by Sweden and Denmark. We consider it a good thing to take part in this special day of Norway; here is our experience of 17 May 2016 in Åkra.

BARNETOG (CHILDDREN'S PARADE

At 10:00 AM , the children from three local schools in Åkra marched on the parade wearing the national costumes, holding the national flags, singing the national anthem, blowing the trumpets, violins , playing the harps, drums and many more music instruments.

FOLKETOG (PROPLE'S PARADE)

Later at 3:00 PM, there was the people's parade which is called, "folketog" or "borgertog" in Norwegian. On people's parade many people, organisations, sport clubs and many more join the parade including Red Cross. This parade was very similar to the children's parade; people were wearing the national costumes, singing songs, singing national anthem, playing music instruments and finally there was an important speech made about this special day, to inform everyone about why 17.May is an important day in Norway.

We had a fun time, and really enjoyed watching all the people in "bunad" (national folk dress) , and watching children celebrating together.
