Youth Camp in Qacha’s Nek

This week Lesotho Red Cross Youth (LRCY) held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Youth Camp in Qacha’s Nek. The week started off with the AGM where the different districts presented their annual reports and a new Youth Executive Board (Landsråd Ungdom) was elected. They then continued with a day of community outreach where they disseminated about the Red Cross through a Fun Walk (a walk from village to village singing and dancing), helped the communities with tree planting and handed out care packages.

Our contribution to the camp were a workshop on social media, and an enlarged game of chutes and ladders (stigespill) which we created by using a large tarpaulin and paint. The point of the game was to show the youths a new and more participatory way of disseminating about the Red Cross. Both the workshop and the game were well received by the youths and we got a lot of great feedback. So much that we are now creating a manual and a template for the youths so they can bring the game to their districts.  In the social media workshop we introduced the youths to Instagram, and we have now created an account for them to use. Follow them here!

The Youth Camp here in Lesotho is a combination of SUK (Sentral Ungdomskonferanse) and Landsleir Ungdom in Norway. It’s interesting how youths from to such different countries can be so alike, and that the Red Cross values and our principles are the same all over the world. We really enjoyed ourselves this week, and appreciate the opportunity to see how the different districts opperate. We hope to meet all the youths again, hopefully in their districts. They really are a great group of volunteers!

This week we also had Juma (the programme coordinator for YDEP) for a visit. It was GREAT to see him and spend some time with him again. He brought us some very missed foods from Norway, and surprised us with SMÅGODT(!!). He definitely gets the boss of the year award!
