We have now begun our journey towards a new everyday life in Lesotho. For those who don’t know where Lesotho is located - it’s in the middle of South Africa. This amazing country is one of only three countries in the world that lies completely surrounded by another country, in addition it’s the only country in the world where the entire country lies a 1000m.a.s.l. “The mountain kingdom of Lesotho“ or “the roof of Africa” will be our home for the next 9 months, more specifically the district of Leribe .
The “we” we are referring to above is Ida and Astri.
Ida is 25 years old and from Nordheimsund in Hardanger, but for the past five years she has been studying Social Anthropology and Geography in Trondheim. This is where she got engaged in the Red Cross as a part of the visitor service and later became the vice president for the Red Cross Youth Circle in Sør-Trøndelag.
Astri is 24 years old and were brought up in Søndre Land, Oppland. For the last four years she has been living in Bergen, studying Pedagogics, Development studies and Sociology. She started as a fundraiser in Bergen Red Cross, and soon became a part of the Homework Support Group. In addition she’s a facilitator for new volunteers.
Some of the things we will be working on is needs assessments, trainings, PMER, amongst others. As a part of the preparations for this work we took part in a Youth Camp held by Fredskorpset (the Norwegian Peace Corpse). Fredskorpset funds the Youth Exchange Delegate Programme (YDEP) and several more youth exchange programmes. The youth camp gave us the opportunity to connect with other youths going on exchange, which we appreciated.
Now we are in the last week of our pre-departure training, and can’t wait to start our adventure. We have so many great expectations for these coming months, especially the volunteers we'll be working with and getting to know a new culture.
