Street Mediation for Russia

Tromsø´s  university being one of the biggest universities in the north, has a center for peace studies. The last weekend we had the visit of a Russian group of students here for a seminar. Given that Street Mediation is an important tool and programme, they were interested in knowing more about this, that is why we held a workshop about the Street Mediation strategy.

Those were two days fulled with activities and theory, but with a lot of fun, games and learning about how to prevent conflict and how the conflict develops. here you have some pictures and videos about this sessions.

Visita a Harstad y Salangen

English version below.

Harstad and Salangen Visit

One of the main goals of our exchange programme is to strength the capacity of the local youth groups and thanks to this visit we had the opportunity to not only have a meeting with the District Director for Red Cross and District Coordinator of youth, but also to visit a local youth group that is just starting activities.

This town is Salangen, new local youth group for this local branch. they started the activities with a Multimix meeting with more than 35 participants. This activity was a total success and it was a great opportunity for us to share our tools with the new Youth leader in Salangen.

We wish the best for this new group, we know that the incoming activities will make the group stronger and stronger, continue doing a great job.

17 de Mayo, Día Nacional de Noruega

English version below

17 of May, National day in Norway

While many countries celebrate their national day with a military parade, the 17th of May is more of a party for everyone, and especially the children. Before you head out in the streets, many will have a "17th of May breakfast" – often a potluck with friends and neighbours – with freshly baked bread, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, and for the grown-ups, champagne.

Children’s parades then take place across the country, and led by marching bands they walk through their communities. The largest of the traditional parades attracts tens of thousands of people waving flags and shouting «hurra!». In Oslo, the parade is greeted by the royal family waving to the crowd.

Nationalistic? Perhaps, but the non-militaristic and generally joyous atmosphere, in addition to the children’s special place in the celebrations, makes the day a largely uncontroversial affair.

The day is also an opportunity for men and women to show off their "bunad", Norway’s traditional costumes. There are hundreds of different ones, with colours and styles indicating where in Norway the owner's ancestry lies.

Significantly less colourful are the red or blue jumpsuits of the "russ", soon-to-be-graduates celebrating the end of 13 years of school. Most of them look extremely tired by May 17th, and the tiredness usually doesn’t stem from them staying up all night studying for their exams ...

The russ have their own parades, with buses and vans with expensive and rather loud sound systems. Ask them for a card, called a "russekort", and you will get their personal calling card, with personal info and more or less funny jokes on it.

Ice cream and hot dogs are traditionally the not-so-nutritious diet during the celebration, while games are played and speeches are held during the afternoon in the local communities.

This is a truly special time to be in Norway, and you should by all means join in with the locals, but don't expect to get much else done that day – most shops and offices are closed on the 17th of May.

"Conflict is energy, so in the instructors workshop i came with no energy and left us filled with it" (Kaisu)
"The workshop pushes you, but you discover strengths inside yourself which will be useful  in many different situations. Worth all the sweat, laughter and tears" (Heidi)
"It was amazing how certain exercises made you feel  that the situation is reality. Experiencing certain feelings create the appropriate base for the reflections" (Susanne)
"Learned so much about myself and others. Such an inspiring course with great people, i will still remember this when i am 90 and senil" (Aurora)
"The workshop is a good combination of learning useful theory and also learning about yourself even though the days were long , i was really inspired, motivated and excited to come every day. A workshop sounds  really boring and tiring, but this was so much fun !Cheers guys!. i have learn so much about myself, than you!" (Pinja)

Street Mediation Finland

Street Mediation is a Norwegian Red Cross programme focus on the pair to pair education to prevent conflict and mediation during conflict situations. Directed to provide the youth with the necessary tools in terms of conflict prevention and mediation.

I was invited to hold a workshop for new instructors in Helsinki, Finland. Together with Hanne Martinusen volunteer for Red Cross in Oslo we traveled to Helsinki where we met Kukka Noura, volunteer for Red Cross in Finland who will be the one in charge of developing and executing this new project called Youth Mediation. Kukka welcomed us in Helsinki with open arms and showed us the city around, "We could not have asked for a better host".

This workshop for new instructors started with 10 participants, all of them very attentive and with a lot of expectations. The first weekend was focus on talk about what a conflict is and how using some tools we can prevent a conflict to develop, Therefore some activities guided us in a self awareness, to understand why we react in the way we do when we are facing conflict situations.

The second weekend was filled with role plays, focused on provide the participants with the tools to use during mediation in a conflict and how to be instructors in Mediation. The group dynamic was great, from the beginning to the end this group leave me wanting for more. The workshop was a total success.

At the end we had 7 new instructors in Mediation with all the skills to provide the youth with the necessary tool to face conflicts in a better way. I can not wait to know more about how this new project starts the implementation in Helsinki.

Here you have some quotes from the participants of this workshop:

"Conflict is energy, so in the instructors workshop i came with no energy and left us filled with it" (Kaisu)
"The workshop pushes you, but you discover strengths inside yourself which will be useful  in many different situations. Worth all the sweat, laughter and tears" (Heidi)

The only thing left is to thank Hanne and Kukka for all the learnings, the support and of course the good times we had in Helsinki. Can not wait to know more about you.

COLOMBIAN LUNSJ

As part of this exchange programme, it is important not to work just with the volunteers, but also with the employees, to develop a connection and to strength the friendship environment among the colleagues. To generate a cultural exchange we cooked lunch for all our colleagues today, there in nothing more Colombian than chicken soup, chicken rise and tostadas with guacamole. we all had a great lunch all together. the common comment was "It is delicious" , so we are very happy with the result. you judge the rest on the pictures.

Youth Olympics

On our way to the opening ceremony.

“I have never taken part of a Youth Olympics before, this was my first time, and what a first time; not just because I´ve enjoyed some of the hockey games, but also because I had the chance to meet face to face almost all the athletes from all the participating countries. This has been one of my greatest experiences so far, as a Youth Delegate.

Diego Junco, Ash Maya Rana and the Slovakian Hockey Team. We as youth Delegates were in charge of the Norwegian Red Cross stand in the Learning and sharing arena. It was great to see how the athletes and the delegations came to our stand to know more about what the Norwegian Red Cross is doing. Among these activities, we had CPR demonstrations, post it activity about what you like the most about yourself and how to use a condom not the least we had the coolest but also greatest experience of a refugee camp ever. With an amazing virtual reality goggles, we gave the participants the real experience of being in a refugee camp, guided by one of the kids who are living there in Syria, so the participants can actually know what it can be like living there.

PÅ FLUKT

The Refugee Experience

The Norwegian Red Cross has an activity for youth that is call På Flukt or «On the Run» English version. This time, the game took place in Fosen, Norway. I had the opportunity to participate as an instructor and live the experience to be on the run as different roles. This time the Leader Instructor was Kristine Nordås Toska, Red Cross volunteer with 7 years of experience and many PÅ FLUKT games and a group of 14 instructors including three Youth Delegates, Durga and Ash Maya from Nepal and Diego from Colombia.

Here we have an interview with Kristine Nordås the Leader Instructor.

PÅ FLUKT

Why did you decide to become a Red Cross Volunteer? Well I do not remember the specific reason, but I looked at the TV Aksjon, that is a fundraising program that time for Red Cross and I actually saw a video from Colombia with the former youth leader. I was like, “oh I want to do this” and then I saw the local paper a couple of months later so I did it. How long have you been involved with På Flukt? Since 2009, seven years now. What made you get involved with På Flukt? One of the girls in the local area where I started, was very involved with På Flukt and she still is, she said you have to do this and then I went to the Instructor Course, actually I had my first my first game at Fosen in 2009 so I have been back here ever since.

Do you take part in other Red Cross Activity? I haven´t done a lot of things in Red Cross youth but i am in Hjelpekorps in addition to På Flukt. What is På Flukt? It is a role play activity from the Norwegian Red Cross about being a refugee for 24 hours to get a little taste of what is like to be on the run basically, you have to go through long walking sessions, filling a lot of papers, feel what it is like to be on the run as a refugee.

It is a good way to change attitudes, because you get the personal experience to be on the run and not just hearing it from someone else, I think it is an effective way to be involved yourself, and it has always been refugees here.  At least now, it is really important to have På Flukt because of the situation with refugees. Is there something else that you want to add for the people who wants to know more about På Flukt? To this question, Kristine said, “It is really fun”. During the evaluation when the participants can see, what På Flukt is all about and listed to their experiences. You can talk to people who went to På Flukt 5 or 10 years ago and they still remember the feeling of being on the run, seeing the difference that makes after a while.   ON THE RUN Diego Fernando Junco Colombian Youth Delegate 2015-2016

Reunion con los Empleados en Tromsø

English version below.

Meeting with our colleagues in Tromsø

In terms of making our work more visible and to generate a good interaction between our colleagues in Tromsø Red Cross and us. We had a meeting with our colleagues, to show them the work we have been doing during this past months since we arrived in this beautiful city. Today we had meeting where we showed which activities we as delegates have been holding with the volunteers in the way to strengthen the capacity and the youth process structure in this district.

The meeting was a total success, our colleagues showed themselves very pleased with the process we´re facilitating and they expressed their intentions of working with us to improve the youth group in every possible way.

Now we just have left to keep working in developing the volunteer´s skills, so they can continue with this process to make it sustainable so the youth group can grow.

Curso basico para Dirigentes.

English version below.

Youth Leaders Workshop

After we have identify some weaknesses when it comes to the activities planning process in the local youth board. We made a diagnostic and some suggestions to the board and the Local Brand leader to improve this process and improve the volunteer[s skills. One of these suggestions was a course about Red Cross “World of Red Cross” (WORC) and one course about Program and Project Planning (PPP), together with our help to plan the incoming activities for the next 2 months.

In the way to reach the Youth Delegate Exchange Programme (YDEP) goal, that is “To strengthen the capacity and structure of the local youth groups” in this case the youth group in Tromsø, so they can start planning activities in a more assertive and effective way. We are now holding a workshop for the local youth leaders, which includes topics like, Red Cross and the movement “World of Red Cross” (WORC), Project and Programme Planning (PPP), this course was meant for the local youth board at first, but we are planning that more volunteers can have it after.

Is not just a workshop for us to talk about planning, we are using now the E-learning platform of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), so the volunteers can have certification right from the Federation system.

At first, the workshop is just a summary version of the before mentioned online courses but also includes assistance for them, so they can be certificated in this courses successfully.

Media Maratón en Tromsø

English version below

Half Marathon in Tromsø

The last Saturday we had the Half Polar Marathon in Tromsø, where tones of athletes and amateurs from all over the world came to compete in this sport event, it begun at 3 pm and ended at 8 pm, there were 3 categories, like 5Km, 10Km and Half Marathon. As a part of the activities from the Hjelpekors group in Tromsø, we attempt to this to support them if they needed any help and to see how they work. Given that is not the same to run in a warm weather that in a cold weather like the one here, we were in charge of taking care of the participants when they got to the goal, because we have to make sure that they do not lose their body heat so fast when they stop running. Therefore, that is why we had to give them some thermal blankets to keep them warm.

It was a very exiting activity. We met some volunteers from Hjelpekorps. Working with them teach us a lot about how they do things, and cooperation between Youth and Hjelpekorps is very important for our learning process. Here you can find some pictures from the event.

English version below

Painting the new Utstyrsbasen

The Tromsø Røde Kors has some equipment for some outdoors activities like skiing, camping, ice-skating, biking, hiking. All this equipment is for everyone to use it, they can borrow it by showing a valid ID or a library card.

The kommune also has the same equipment and give the same service to the community, so Red Cross and the commune have decide to work together and open just one place for this people to go and rent the equipment there, this is placed between the library and the cinema. That is why yesterday, with Dasha the district youth leader, we went there to paint and decorate the room so it can be cool for the youth to go there and get the equipment. We hope the youths like the design.

Noche de Fiesta Colombiana

(English version below)

Colombian Party Night

It is not a secret that the refugee situation is now one of the most important things to work on,  and not just about the families that come to Norway, but also the youth that came here alone and have lost their families, that is why this time, the Colombian Night was for them trying to generate places for meeting and socialize with other people, and also of course enjoy the great Colombian food.

This December 23 we had our second Colombian Night, full with facts, music, and Colombian food, this time with youth from Middle East that are living in Norway without adults, we shared a great time, and enjoyed good food, and turn that space in a place for refugees and volunteers to talk and eat together.

We can not wait to have our next activity and share more time with this youth who really needs it.

(English version below)

HIV world day.

The 1st of December is an important day for all the volunteers in the Red Cross. After have the workshop last week, five volunteers join us to the activity on the 1st of December in the Kvaløysletta Ungdomskole. We were in ten different classrooms spreading information related with Sexual Transmitted Infections, Hiv and condoms. We went to each classroom and with flayers that we made about STI talk about some of them. This year we try to spread information not just about hiv, but also about STI because for example here in Norway young people is having more chlamydia or syphilis that hiv.  That does not mean that we are going to stop to talk about hiv, that means that we have to talk about more things.

We also make an activity to show to the students how easy is to get an STI if someone do not use condom in the proper way and constantly. Make them sign in a post it, and get their classmates signatures. After they have to check in the back of the post it and see which color they have there. Red means chlamydia, blue syphilis, yellow hiv and green was condom. So, those who have green where always safe, but the others get usually all the STI. After we talk about the care that someone has to have with the condoms. Check the expiration date, the air in the condom and do not open the condom with anything that has sharp.
